In 1987 in Montreal, Canada the United States joined 24 other nations in signing the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In 1988 the United States Environmental Protection Agency enacted the provisions of this agreement into regulations for the U.S. All the refrigerants mentioned above were affected. R-12 and R-502 have already been banned for use in new products. Their current cost makes them almost prohibitive to use for major repairs.
R-22 Refrigerant is normally found in all residential and light commercial air conditioners. Since R-22 is not as harmful to the environment as other refrigerants, the federal government is allowing a slower phase-out for this type. Starting in 2010, R-22 will not be used as the refrigerant in newly manufactured equipment. In 2015 there will be production freezes and use limitations. In 2020 new uses for this refrigerant will be prohibited. In 2030 there will be a total phase-out of R-22. R-410A is a new, environmentally sound refrigerant. Many people know it by the name of PuronŽ. This is the refrigerant that Southeastern HVAC uses for your home. Your environment is an important consideration when selecting an air conditioning and heating contractor. PuronŽ is a registered trade name of the Carrier Corporation.
